Today’s diverse workforces with candidates from different backgrounds with different salary structures, skills and experience make it more difficult than ever for companies to benchmark or standardise packages for their new employees – and this is even harder for startups given the uncertainty and higher risk profile.
Q: So what package should I offer?
A: It depends!
Timing is everything and there are always many considerations such as budget, skills availability, external economic conditions to name but a few. The ideal outcome is a win/win – both you and your new employee should feel that the price is right and this is where we can help.
A “market salary” is often determined by simply outbidding what your competitors are willing to pay for the same skills. We can provide reassurance that you have not paid over the odds by providing comparison data for similar roles in similar organisations. Remember – it is not just about the salary – other aspects of your offer can be just as important but the appeal will vary from candidate to candidate (think job challenge, flexible working, share options etc). Consideration must always be given to the long-term implications of non-standard compensation & benefits as your company begins to scale.
Finally, sometimes your ideal candidate may simply be beyond the reach of your budget and we will advise you when we believe this to be the case. In this situation we can advise alternative solutions by revisiting your Recruitment Strategy
